Controller Port LEDs
/ Without modifying the yellow wire or any controllers (fully functional ports)

Introduction:
First off let me say that I am not the first one to do this mod, the idea has been done many times before, however I am the first one to accomplish it using the “grounded shielding” method that I discovered when performing my Hardwired DVD dongle mod.

Required Tools:
Torx drivers T20, and T10
Wire cutters/strippers
Soldering iron (15 watt recommended)

Required Parts:
An Xbox (modified or unmodified)
4 LEDs (your choice)
4 Resistors (I recommend 270ohm)
Lots of wire (26 or 28 gauge is best)
Electrical tape
Ohm Meter (recommended but not necessary)

Step 1 (Open the Box):
-Open up the Xbox and remove the HDD and DVD assemblies. If you don’t know how to do that then you can find a tutorial here.

-Remove the controller port assemblies by first unplugging them then unscrewing the Torx screws on either side and pulling up on the back.

Step 2 (Isolate the Shielding):
-Look were the controller ports used to be and you’ll notice the metal shielding ends in 3 little tabs; one on the bottom and one on each side (see diagram). Remove the two tabs on the sides of each port and leave the one on the bottom.

-Next cover up the bottom tab and all the metal edges around where the controller port goes. Also cover the bottom and sides (where the taps you removed would have touched) of the actual port.

Step 3 (Wiring Up):
-Cut 8 lengths of wire long enough to reach from the controller port to where you’re mounting the LED. (I used about 8 Inches) and strip the ends.

-Solder one wire to the back of each controller port; this is your ground (see pic).

-Place the controller port assemblies back in place and test to make sure there is no contact between the shielding on the port (where you soldered the wire) and the shielding in the rest of the Xbox (any other metal part around the ports)

-Take the other 4 wires and fold the one stripped end in half to make a small hook.

-Insert these “hooks” in with the red wires on each port connector (there are 2 red wires on each connector) once they’re all inserted plug the connector back in place. Make sure they’re snug. This is your 5Volt Power

Step 4: (Resistors and LEDs)
If you’ve followed everything so far you should have a 5V and a Ground for each port.

-Take your 4 LEDs and cut the positive side down to about ¼ inch. Do the same with one side of each of your resistors. (*Note the negative side of the LED is usually flat while the positive side remains round, or most of the time the positive lead is the longer one)

-Solder the short end of the resistor to the short end of the LED so it looks like this:

Step 5 (mounting the LEDs):
-Decide where you want to mount your LEDs and mount them there (I’m not going to cover how to do this you should have an idea of what to do, be creative) It’s popular to drill holes in the front above the controller ports and glue the LEDs there. Check out the xbox-scene forums for ideas
-Once the LEDs are properly mounted in place solder the proper positive and negative pair to the corresponding LED (as per the diagram above)
-Put the Xbox back together and try it out.

Troubleshooting:
Problem: LED(s) are always on.
Solution: you need to go back to step2 and make sure there is no connection between the shielding of the port and the shielding in the Xbox.

Problem: LED(s) never light up.
Solution 1: check that the LED(s) aren’t soldered in backwards (try reversing the +/-).
Solution 2: check for loose/bad wiring.
Solution 3: Make sure the LED(s) actually work and aren’t burnt out.

Problem: LED(s) sometimes flicker when a controller is plugged in.
Solution 1: you need to go back to step2 and make sure there is no connection between the shielding of the port and the shielding in the Xbox.
Solution 2: try a different controller… the plug/port might be loose (not much you can do short of replacing it)

Problem: SERIOUS/ Xbox wont boot up, flashes red/green, etc….
Solution: You probably have a short somewhere where the positive 5Volts is connected directly to ground check all your wiring!!! If you don’t see anything remove the LEDs and wiring and see if it boots up (if this works then you had a problem shorting out the LED on the shielding)

Problem: SERIOUS/ Xbox shuts down (fucks up) when you plug in a controller.
Solution: You have incorrect wiring or a short/ check everything.

Cantona, for writing the original controller port LED mod
And especially everyone else who’s taken the time to wire a tut for the betterment of all.
