READ
FIRST:
This tutorial
might
not apply
to ALL
models
of Xbox
controllers,
What i
used for
this was
the controller
that came
with the
Xbox X-mas
package
with Jetset
Radio
and Sega
GT 2002
and the
S controller
it supplys,
i did
not use
a Third
Party
Brand
like Mad
Catz.
Intro:
This following
tutorial
will explain
step by
step on
how to
install
a LED,
or, as
i used,
a simple
christmas
light
into the
middle
of the
X logo
on your
Xbox controller...
i will
try to
make this
as simple
as possible.
as i too
knew what
it felt
like when
u first
jump on
board
of the
modding
train.....
What
you need:
* Flathead
screwdriver
* Philips
head Screwdriver-
to open
up Controller
* 2 wires
that are
fairly
long-Prefferebly
covered
so it
wont touch
another
electrical
thing
(make
em 1 foot
just for
insurence)
* Patience
* Wire
cutters
* Wire
strippers
* Drill
bit the
diametor
of a Xmas
light,
and another
a tinsy
bit bigger
* Clean
working
area
* LED
light
or Cristmas
light
(color
of your
choice)
Ok
now onto
the activity
Once
you find
a LED
or Xmas
light
u like
(i chose
blue)
goto your
workspace,
make sure
it is
clean,
as it
is easy
to lose
buttons
and stuff.
Step
1:
Use
the Philips
screwdriver
to open
up the
xbox controller,
once opened,
remove
the two
motors
on the
side handle
of the
casing,
those
are the
vibrators.
DO NOT
Cut any
wires,
keep everything
togather.....
Step2:
Once
the Vibrators
are free,
lift the
circuit
board
off the
controller.
and put
all the
gray rubber
button
contacts
and buttons
in a seperate
space.
Step
3:
OK
now so
far, you
should
have 5
pieces
of stuff:
1. Screws
for the
case.
2. Back
half of
case
3. buttons
4.circuit
board.
and 5.
front
half of
case..
Take
the Front
half of
the case,
you should
notice
that on
the oposite
side (inner
of the
case)
of where
the X
box logo
is, there
is a circular
glossy
black
plastic.
Take the
drill
bit thats
the same
size as
the
Xmas light
and use
your HAND
(can use
gloves,
or may
get blisters)
to turn
the bit
to drill
into the
center
of the
circular
plastic.
it takes
about
1 minute
of turning
to start
really
making
a hole.
every
few turns
check
to see
if there
is a white
material
at the
center
of the
hole.
if so
you are
just about
to puncture
the X
in the
logo.
so keep
turning
untill
its all
the way
through.
Step
4:
Once you
get all
the way
through,
take the
light
and stick
in halfway
through
the hole...
and make
sure the
Wires
apart,
you dont
want to
short
anything
out.
Step
5:
once
that is
done Look
at your
Xbox S
controller
circuit
board.
Locate
where
the memory
expansion
slots
are (those
things
at the
top of
the controller),
there
should
be 5 or
so metal
prongs
going
into it,
2 of them
are the
ones you
need to
use:
This is
a simple
little
thing
of the
wires
and the
ones you
need to
use:
Ground
(1st one
to use)---->
| | |
| | <-------
5v Power
(2nd one
to use)
so pretty
much use
the one
on the
left and
right
ends.
Take a
Flat head
Screwdriver
and pry
those
2 out
of the
Exansion
slot
without
breaking
it of
the circuit
board
(really
easy).
and take
those
2 wires
and strip
each end
of the
wires
after
cutting
it to
what you
think
is the
right
length
to connect
them from
the light
to the
Expansion
Prongs.
Give them
like a
little
bit of
slack
for the
wire...
now connect
1 wire
from the
5V prong
to a wire
on the
light.
You may
solder
them if
you wish.
now push
the 5
V back
into
the expansion
slot to
tightly
secure
it.
do the
same thing
with the
other
wire only
using
the Ground
prong
and the
OTHER
wire on
the light..
Step
6:
now that
you have
that done,
put everything
back together
making
sure that
the wires
are in
between
the buttons
and
their
contacts.
once done,
plug in
your controller
and turn
the Xbox
on and
you'll
see a
light
that works!
