Is the Xbox Portable Just a Pipe Dream?
>> From mobilemag.com:
At this point, it seems unlikely that we'll be seeing an Xbox Portable any time soon. Even so, we can go ahead and pursue this pipedream, just for the sake our own imagination and curiosity. What form factor would be the most appropriate for an Xbox Portable?

Some combination of the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP would probably be the best, I think. You can map the standard Xbox controller on the bottom half, and then have a large widescreen display that flips up in a clamshell kind of way. In the center of the controller portion, you could have a touch-sensitive section that adjusts to the current situation, like the Motorola E8. I don't think a touchscreen is needed, nor is a full QWERTY keyboard. This is a gaming machine, not a messenger.

Not that it matters. I don't think Microsoft is going to grace us with an Xbox 360 Portable. Prove me wrong, Redmond. Prove me wrong.

Microsoft Enviroment video reveals datacenter server numbers - Xbox LIVE?
>> From vgwatchdog.com:
Have you ever wondered how Microsoft provide those services for you? XBOX LIVE for instance surely must need more horsepower than a general website would need, wouldnt it? :) It's probably safe to bet that all of Microsoft's online operations doesn't run off a single server in the basement of Gates' house. However, a recent promotional video produced by Microsoft's Environmental Sustainability group may have accidentally spilled the beans.

Some quick stats: 15 datacenters hosting 148,357 servers sitting on 17,406 racks consuming 72,500KW of utility power as of the end of January 2008 (as indicated by the bar chart).

On the same page there's also an interesting graph showing the distribution of servers per "property". Live Search is in the clear lead with approximately 75,000 (50%) of the servers pushing out those less-than-desirable search results, followed by Hotmail. The other notable property occupying a large chunk of the servers would be "other" (appropriately named), which one could assume be dedicated to XBOX Live services and the like.

Japan: Xbox 360 outsells PS3 2.5-to-1
>> From edge-online.com:
Microsoft's Xbox 360 scored a notable victory in Japan during the week ended August 10, shifting almost 25,000 units to outsell the PS3 2.5-1.

The console's jump in popularity - it sold 5,359 units the previous week - was no doubt fueled by the release of Namco Bandai's Tales of Vesperia, which debuted at No4 in the software chart after selling 108,000 copies.

Xbox 360 Experiencing 'Stagnant' Demand, says Pachter
>> From gamedaily.com:
Following the NPD's July video game sales data, which revealed just a bit over 200,000 units sold for Microsoft's Xbox 360, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has proclaimed demand for the platform to be "stagnant." Rumors have swirled that Microsoft is preparing to cut prices across its hardware SKUs - a move that UBS analyst Ben Schachter believes would have a "significant impact."

Pachter commented, "Xbox 360 hardware sales were again lighter than we expected, indicating that Microsoft may be experiencing stagnant demand. The company cut the price of its Xbox 360 Pro (20GB) by $50 to $299 in July, but demand remained fairly flat. We do not expect a significant bump in August with the release of the new Pro 60GB at $349. We expect Microsoft to reconsider its pricing strategy, especially if sales of the Xbox 360 continue to lag sales of the PS3."

Microsoft Responds To July NPD Sales
>> Microsoft's reply to the July NPD sales via kotaku.com.au:
July was a solid month for Xbox 360. We dominated the E3 landscape, took home 11 Game Critics Awards and closed out a profitable year with $2.1 billion in growth in our Entertainment & Devices Division (Microsoft internal data).

Just this week, G4TV, unveiled its fan-voted G-Phoria Award winners for 2008 and G4's audience made it emphatically clear that Microsoft offers the most impressive gaming lineup in the industry, naming Xbox 360 Console of the Year, "Halo 3" the overall Game of the Year, and "Mass Effect" the Best Role-Playing Game of the Year. "Halo 3" earned an additional four nominations in the Best Shooter, Best Online Multiplayer Game, Longest Lasting Game, and Best Downloadable Content categories.

Overall, Xbox 360 garnered the most honorees with 15, followed by the Playstation 3's 14, while Nintendo's Wii offered only four winning titles. The Xbox 360's strengths were apparent as it was the only platform to offer all five nominees in the Best Downloadable Content category, and four nominees (including the winners) in both the Best Online Multiplayer and Best Shooter categories.

And we're projecting 2009 will be even bigger - we'll sell more consoles, sell more games, and continue to grow our online community at Xbox LIVE.

The NPD Group issued its July 2008 sales data today showing Xbox 360 as the current generation leader in consumer spend, game sales and software attach rate. Here is a snapshot:

Since its launch, consumers have spent more than $10.4 billion on the Xbox 360 platform in the U.S., capturing 49% of share. (July NPD data)
205,000 Xbox 360 consoles were sold in July. (July NPD data)
Xbox 360 titles accounted for $129 million, or 34% share, in game sales in July. Of that, Xbox 360 generated $121 million at retail for third-party publishers, or 42% of share. (July NPD data)
Xbox 360 games accounted for four of the top ten games in July. (July NPD data)
Xbox 360 has a record-setting attach rate of 7.9 games per console, the highest attach rate in history for a console at this point in its lifecycle. (July NPD data)

The announcements we made at E3 come to life beginning this fall with the new Xbox experience which will evolve and deepen the experience for hardcore gamers while inviting a whole new audience to come and play. Couple that with our exclusive partnership with Netflix and a blockbuster games library boasting more than 1,000 titles including "Lips," "You're in the Movies" and Best Action Game of E3 "Gears of War 2" (Game Critics Awards), and Xbox 360 is on track to deliver a record-breaking holiday and keep the momentum going into 2009.
Note: In the US the PS3 sold 224900 units [MGS4], Xbox 360 sold 204800 units and the Wii sold 555000 units in July.

Warner Music Announces Music Video Agreement for LIVE
>> From the press release:
Warner Music Group (NYSE: WMG) today announced that it will make its music videos available to Microsoft's Xbox LIVE community around the world.

Beginning this week, more than 12 million Xbox LIVE members worldwide can download music videos by featured WMG artists from Xbox LIVE Marketplace and watch them on their Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system. The music videos will be from WMG's world-renowned roster of artists including Cute is What We Aim For, Death Cab For Cutie, Flo Rida, Matchbox Twenty, Panic! At the Disco and T.I. among others.

In making the announcement, Larry Mattera, Senior Vice President, Digital Sales & Marketing, WEA Corp., WMG's U.S. retail sales and marketing company, said, "Xbox 360 has been an important partner in our efforts to offer consumers more ways to experience our artists' music and this is especially true among gamers who are some of the most passionate music fans. With this agreement, we can take advantage of Microsoft's music platform and provide gamers what they want: music videos from their favorite artists that can be downloaded quickly and easily."

In the coming weeks and months the WMG offering on Xbox LIVE will continue to grow. "We've expanded on the strength of our gaming platform with new entertainment experiences," said Xbox LIVE Sr. Group Product Manager, Peter Orullian. "We're excited to offer WMG music videos to our 12 million members around the world as we continue to evolve our music presence."

Xbox LIVE already offers much more than its great game line-up, providing its members with movies, TV episodes, and ways to stay connected with the global community. And coming this fall, Microsoft will introduce a new Xbox experience that will reinvent home entertainment from the inside out, changing the way people stay in touch and enjoy the best entertainment content. The addition of WMG music provides strategic growth for both partners, while giving consumers more entertainment options.

Microsoft about Web-based XBLA Interface
>> From developmag.com:
Broad details about Microsoft's further plans for its new Xbox 360 dashboard were relayed to developers at the UK Gamefest event in London last week, Develop understands.

One session about Marketplace sales and content explained that Microsoft is readying a web-based interface to the online store (which sells DLC, Xbox Live Arcade Games, and also movies) that is currently only accessible via the console interface.

Via the new storefront users will be able to browse available Xbox 360 content from their computer - either at home or work - which will be then be 'sent' to their console as a download. (Presumably, the system requires the console to be in a sleep mode and utilises the on-board download manager to work.)

With the Marketplace having a web-based counterpart, Microsoft told assembled developers that it will be possible for them to virally promote their games via links on the web. The same features are also expected to be available to indie developers using the XNA Creators Club channel when that launches with the new Xbox 360 dashboard update later this year.

Rivet 1.2 adds Aperture sharing for Xbox 360
>> From macnn.com:
Cynical Peak has released a new update to Rivet, its Mac software for the Xbox 360. The app lets users stream music, photos and videos to a 360 console, which normally requires the use of a PC and Windows Media Player.

The new version of the software adds support for Apple's photo workflow software, Aperture, which can now share library photos automatically, triggering updates in Rivet whenever files are added or deleted. Cynical has also fixed problems with media parsing, particularly for iTunes libraries, and a separate "silent quit" error. The software costs $19 and requires Mac OS X 10.5.

Indie Game Developer Finds Success - 825K USD Sales In Week1
>> From alleyinsider.com:
Jonathan Blow, developer of the game Braid, an Xbox game that's somewhat similar to early 'Mario' games for Nintendo. His game has only been on sale for a week, but he estimates it's already sold 55,000 copies for the Xbox 360. At $15 per game, that's $825,000 in first week gross sales. Microsoft takes a cut -- we don't know how much -- but that's still a really impressive debut.

Jonathan said that with his projected sales (which he didn't break out), he should be able to make game developing a full-time gig. And while not everyone will be as successful as he's been, it's solid evidence that indie developers can now build a substantial business making games for consoles.

Report: PC, Xbox 360 Dominate Game Development
>> From gamedaily.com:
According to the 2008 Game Development Survey, a new 180-page report from Game Developer Research that questions nearly 2,000 developers from North America and elsewhere (mostly Europe), the PC still rules the development roost. 70 percent of those surveyed said they are making games for the PC/Mac, compared to 43 percent who are making console games, 28 percent who are making games for web platforms and 16 percent who are making portable games (DS, PSP).

Interestingly, on the console front, console developers seem to show a preference for Microsoft's Xbox 360. 73 percent are creating games for 360, 58 percent (including some of the same respondents) for PS3, and 42 percent for the Wii. 15 percent are also still creating games for the PS2.

NPD details gamer demographic research
>> From shacknews.com:
Using information gathered back in January and February, the report separated the North American game-playing populace into the following seven categories, totaling 174 million gamers:
* Young Heavy Gamers: 22%
* Seconday Gamers: 20%
* Console Games: 17%
* Offline PC Gamers: 15%
* Online PC Gamers: 14%
* Avid PC Gamers: 9%
* Extreme Gamers: 3%

Though PCs were "used more than any single console for gaming," NPD stressed that "Console Gamers, Young Heavy Gamers and Extreme Gamers are more likely to use consoles than a PC to play video games."

In addition to stating that PlayStation 3 owners are most likely to have other "next-generation" consoles than Wii and Xbox 360 owners, NPD claimed that only 10% of PS2 owners have a PS3.

'Less than 3 out of 10 games recover costs,' says EIF boss
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
Edinburgh Interactive Festival chairman Chris Deering has warned the games industry that it must look for new revenue sources as development costs rise and software sales fall.

"My guess and analysis shows that less than 3 out of 10 games recover their development and marketing costs with boxed goods sales," said Deering. "So what's going to have to happen? Creative use of hybrid online and offline advertising revenues, online offline transactions with consumers - these business models must be explored."

According to Deering, the big trends of the next decade will include the growth of internet-served video, the expansion of fanbases into new communities, increased remote data storage and the emergence of global virtual currencies. He also predicted the growth of mobile social networks, TV, GPS and advertising - all of which present the games industry with new opportunities to create games and seek out revenues.

(Japan) Tales of Vesperia pushed Xbox 360 above PS3
>> From news.vgchartz.com:
Xbox 360 Software - Tales of Vesperia debuted for the Xbox 360 this week. The preliminary data puts the game at 113,000 units week one. Considering Blue Dragon is still the only Xbox 360 game to top 103,000 units in Japan, Microsoft and Namco have to be quite happy with how the game has done so far. From the Tales push, expect Xbox 360 hardware sales to hit 12,000 to 20,000 units this week.

Expect PS3 hardware sales to remain in the 8,000 to 12,000 unit range this week.

Microsoft: 'The Wii third party game story is not a pretty one'
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
Last week, Nintendo of America's vice president of corporate affairs, Denise Kai(info)gler, defended the Wii's third party sales saying, "We are selling third party games and they are doing very well, and better than our competitors."

But according to NPD information obtained from Microsoft by GamesIndustry.biz, that Nintendo claim appears to be wrong:
* Total third party sales for the Xbox 360 since launch is currently 67,929,999 units, followed by the Wii at 33,394,311 units and the PlayStation 3 at 19,976,325 units.
* Third party sales for the Xbox 360 since the launch of the Wii and PS3 is 54,065,728 units, still almost double the Wii's 33,394,311 units.
* If you take the total number of units sold and divide that by the number of titles released since November 2006, the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are selling more units per title on average than the Wii. This puts the Xbox 360 at 217,252 units per title, the PS3 at 156,065 units and the Wii at 132,517 units.
