Tech Update: MemCard Drivers, bf Packer, Raw Dumps, DVD Auth. Encrypted
>> * maximilian0017 released a driver for Xbox 360 Memory cards. It will still be a raw device (so device won't appear in explorer or so), but no manual forcing of drivers will be neccesary. You can see how to modify your Xbox 360 memorycard to connect on PC via USB here, a larger doc/guide is available here and another method here. Download driver: here
* th0mas already released a bf Unpacker last week, now player98198 released a new GUI utily on XBH that will allow you to both pack and unpack .bf files. The .bf files are some sort of archive format (not compressed) used on the Xbox 360, or atleast in the game King Kong. Download: here
* Gael360 has released some nice tools for creating raw dumps of 360 discs using the hot/swap method (you will have to open your PC drive):
So let's start with the hotswap method. I think everyone here already knows that the TOC of the original game is a fake one, so you have to load a big DVD (data or movie, more than 8Go) in your drive, then stop it (my software has a function for that), and replace by the game you want to backup. Now the DVD drive thinks that you have a big DVD loaded, so it let you access all the Xbox DVD sectors (nearly 4000000). But because your hotswap DVD is larger than the Xbox DVD, you have to find the difference between the two DVD, to compensate the shift of the second layer (layer1).
The software has a function to find the shift, it's called 'Hotswap/Find magic number'. To do that, the software use some 'bench marks' on layer0 and layer1. These bench marks are already known by the software, and stored in a little text file (provided with the software). So for now you have to use a known game to find the magic number. When you have it, you can replace in the drive the known game by an unknown one. And if you want the software to add the unknown game to thje database, you just have to clic on 'Hotswap/Add game to database' and choose a name for the game.
You can check his thread on our forums here, the original french thread on gueux or the XBH thread here[tech only!]. Official Site: http://bouclier.free.fr/wxRipper.php Download: wxRipper v1.1 beta (includes wx360/wxStop)
* The (very) technical thread about the DVD drive on XboxHacker.net revealed some more interesting information. In short: On the original Xbox all communication on the IDE bus was unencrypted, but on the Xbox 360 some part of the ATAPI communication is encrypted (it seems to be only 'authentication' related communication like mode sense/mode select and Read dvd structure). More details here[Please remember if you choose to participate that this thread is for technical discussion only, thanks!]

OpenDash WIP Update
>> D0wnlab/th0mas posted an update about OpenDash (an opensource dashboard currently in development for Xbox that can be build with the legal OpenXDK(info)) on th0mas.xbox-scene.com
I should update what's going on lately. In OpenDash news, friedgold has started to work on OpenDash's OpenXDK code lately, and together we're fixing the remaining bugs.. all our work is, naturally in the sourceforge.net CVS which can be accessed via the sf.net project page. He figured out a major bottleneck in the blitting code that should increase the framerate in openxdk based projects by significant amount. I'm working on the basic skin that will be released with the program. In other news, there's a lot of cool talk on the XBH forums, regarding Xbox360 hacking. I wrote an unpacker for .BF files, but am not planning on releasing an update since another forum member beat me to an unpacker. As long as everyone is satisfied with that tool I won't write my own since it's just redoing someone else's work. Other than that, school is in full swing, so time is naturally sporadic.
Xbox 360 Dashboard/LIVE Update Coming? No BC update till March?
>> From computerandvideogames.com:
According to internet reports from Norwegian website IT Avisen, Microsoft are currently finalising a large Xbox Live Update. Along with useful bug fixes and tweaks - such as the ability to perform downloads in the menu background - the update is said to contain support for the console's elusive webcam, rumoured to be hitting stores soon. From activexbox.com:
We've been informed today that there are going to be no more Backward Compatibility updates released for the Xbox 360 until March at the earliest. Microsoft's David Reid has stated that the team who do the BC work are on holiday throughout January and will start work on priority titles when they return. But from what it sounds like, there will be only a few more updates released through 2006.
Read More: activexbox.com

Original XboxHacker.Net Forum Archives Online
>> From SiliconIce on xboxhacker.net:
Well, after a short testing period I am putting this out there for the public once again. I present the orignal XboxHacker BBS Archives. There are a few quirks due to the conversion - old links to posts are not valid. Emoticon images also use invalid links. I will work on fixes to these at some point if I can.
A lot of cool stuff happened back then, here are a couple cool postings of note: * A recount of some of the work done by Bunnie to retrieve the Xbox key: here * The long classic thread about analyzing Xbox v1.1: here * And fully cracked: here * And here is a post with numbnut and bunnie, hackers in love (ok, I am being goofy here ;-)): here
Please let me know if there are any issues (post to the XBH Site Discussion section of the forums). The archives board should be READ ONLY and not allow registration, new posts, or editing of any material, even if you posted it. If you notice anything that goes against this, please let me know. I'd like to keep the archive in original condition :-)
Chinese Analyst Says The Xbox 360 Will Fail in China
>> From gameshout.com:
President of Shanda Interactive Entertainment in China, Jun Tang, has expressed his grim impressions of the Xbox360's future release in the Chinese market. If you thought the Japanese release was bad, Tang thinks it'll be worse in China.
The first reason being that the Xbox360 has little diversity in games. The second reason is that the Xbox360 is extremely expensive and consumers in China won't want to purchase such an expensive device if they aren't promised great games for it. As a result, Tang says, the market for the Xbox360 won't be good in China for a timespan of about 2 to 3 years.
Xbox Games Grew 56pct, Suggests 360 DVDs Are Big Enough
>> From gamesfirst.com:
Since the Xbox 360 uses the same DVD9 media format as the original Xbox, Microsoft has been accused by some of being left behind.
Without the additional storage capacity of new formats like HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs, some gamers have been concerned that game developers will have troubles making next generation games on the Xbox 360. Even if the first generation of 360 games are able to fit on the DVD9 format, people argue, there is little room for games to grow over time.
But is DVD9 really too small?
1up Interview with Peter Moore
>> EGM (via 1up) posted a new interesting and pretty 'aggresive' interview with Peter Moore, the Corporate Vice President of Worldwide Retail Sales and Marketing for Microsoft's Home and Entertainment Division (translation: He has to make Xbox 360 the #1 console in the world). Here's an excerpt:
* EGM: Wouldn't you be pissed if you paid $400 for a new console and many of its games looked only marginally better than their current-gen equivalents? * PM: You wanna call out some games? Because I'm not gonna call out any games.
* EGM: But let's look at the PS1 generation and the jump to Dreamcast. On all levels, no matter which games you look at, you can immediately see a huge improvement in graphics. With a lot of 360 games, the leap isn't there, don't you agree? * PM: That's an opinion that I don't share, but look at it [this way]...we're selling games at an unprecedented rate; we're breaking records. Clearly, consumers are happy about something. And I think it's not just people looking at the graphics. Where people are really excited is the online experience, the Marketplace experience, Xbox Live Arcade, and being able to join Xbox Live Silver for no charge and no credit card. You can't just pinpoint and say the graphics in Gun don't look good, therefore the entire ecosystem's got a problem. Gamers are smarter than that. They're looking at the entire experience. They also know games will continue to look better, if looking good is one of their higher criteria, which it typically is. But there are enough greatlooking games out there to combat that, if you're looking for graphics. You know, people have to make their own choices, and if they determine that this is not worth their 400 bucks, then it does seem like there's somebody in line behind them that does think it is.
* EGM: The machine's awfully loud, isn't it? * PM: Hmm...you've got a lot going on there. I mean, I have not noticed it, and you know one of the cores will shut down when you're watching a movie on it, so I have noticed [the noise] once I get into gameplay. When it first cranks up, like a lot of things, the fans get going and off you go, but you've got a lot of power, you've got a lot of heat, and what you're hearing is the drive or the fans maybe--those things have to work. Again, that's another thing that nobody seems to be concerned about.
XboxMediaCenter (XBMC) 2006-01-18 CVS T3CH build
>> T3CH released a new CVS compile of XboxMediaCenter(info). This T3CH-compile is a BAREBONE package (with just a few thirdparty scripts and with just the default skin) compiled with XDK v5849. Here's the added stuff from the changelog since the 2006-01-11 CVS release: * added: settings->video->subtitles, option to look for subs in rars, defaults to off because it causes lots of caching * added: "Move Item" function to both Now Playing windows context menu. This can move an item (almost) anywhere in the list. The exception is if the list is currently being played, then moved item cannot be moved past the currently playing item. This is because all items in-between need to be altered, but the currently playing item cannot be altered. If you try to move beyond the currently playing item, your moved item will be located at the slot adjacent to the currently playing item. * added: playlist playback is aborted and the current playlist cleared after 100 *CONSECUTIVE* failed items * added: try/catch handling for threads started in dll's. allows a more gracefull exit for mplayer, should cache thread fail ... rest of changelog (including many fixes): here.
Keep in mind this is a CVS snapshot of the current development tree. It's not an official (stable) point release. Use only if you know what you are doing.

OXM Interview with Bill Gates
>> The Official Xbox Magazine UK posted a new interview with Bill Gates. Here's a short excerpt:
* OXM: Xbox 360 appears to be a definite step towards your vision of the digital entertainment home and lifestyle. Any hints on what we can expect in our digital entertainment future? * Bill Gates: Xbox 360 is the fusion of raw technological power and elegant design at an affordable price. There's a lot of talk about killer apps, but as far as I'm concerned, Xbox 360 is the killer app for any HDTV setup.
* OXM: What single feature of the Xbox 360 hardware excites you most? * Bill Gates: I'm really excited about the three processor cores that IBM developed for Xbox 360. It enables game developers to create amazing, sweeping environments, lifelike AI, realistic physics, richer worlds and stunning visual clarity. Then there's Xbox Live, which is more than just about games - it's about all the people who power new and exciting gameplay experiences.
GameStop expects to fulfill 360 preorders in February
>> From gamespot.com:
According to a well-placed source, GameStop headquarters recently sent out an internal e-mail to all its stores stating that the retailer has fulfilled an estimated 70 percent of all in-store preorders for the Xbox 360. The memo went on to say that the chain has filled all of its "first shipment" preorders, and that all remaining orders should be completed in February.
The source also told GameSpot that GameStop locations have seen a number of non-preordered $299 Xbox 360 Core Systems appear on shelves for immediate purchase. Apparently, many gamers who preordered systems are holding out for the $399 Xbox 360 Premium Systems, which come with a wireless controller and hard drive.
Unique 16 bytes in Xbox 360 DVD Firmware
>> From MacDennis on xboxhacker.net:
Some new firmware facts! A little birdie told me some information about a second dump of a Toshiba/Samsung TS-H943 DVD-ROM drive. In comparison with the dump made by darkfly, only 16 bytes are different. The difference is at offset 0x401A - 0x4029. Thanks little birdie for your great effort! A 16 byte difference was also the case with the GDR-3120 dumps.
All clues indicate that each Xbox 360 DVD-rom firmware contains an unique key. I couldn't match the key to a console id / serial or drive serial. It's probably an unique key used in the AES routine to encrypt/decrypt communication between console and drive. Something which is new for the Xbox 360.
Blacklisted411 ICE ModChip Research
>> I know I said I wouldn't post about it anymore unless they came with a real proof, but today Ustler at Blacklisted411 (a famous hackers magazine established over 20 years ago) released a research article about ICE Team's supposed Xbox 360 modchip:
We[Blacklisted411.net] have recently finished our work on icemodchip (A supposed Xbox 360 modchip). XLink Kai Founders To Produce Commercial Online Service for Sony PSP?
>> It's not really Xbox related, but we've always been following up on XLink Kai(info) stuff so I thought it'd be interesting to mention we got some leaked information from sources close to the people behind the XLink Kai tunneling software claiming that they are about to announce a new commercial PSP online gaming network - possibly as soon as Q2 this year.
Will this be a tunneling service - or something more unified - like Xbox Live!? Is it officially supported by Sony (unlikely)? Why is it a commercial product from a crew which have always contributed free services to the community? Will it get support from game developers? How is it different from the existing Kai PSP support (that will not cease to exist of course and development will continue) - justifying a price tag?
Notable members of Kai's technical crew have either resigned or gone missing over the last few months - so this story could have some weight. Looking over XLink's site gives nothing away, and attempts to contact the resigned members have gone unanswered.

Microsoft Still Firmly Behind HD-DVD
>> Last week we told you Peter Moore said a Blu-Ray addon for Xbox 360 was not impossible. Looks like the HD-DVD camp didn't like that comment as planetxbox360.com reports Microsoft now comes with an official statement that they are still fully committed to HD-DVD and that there are no plans for a Blu-Ray addon:
Microsoft firmly stands behind the HD-DVD format as the best choice for our consumers. As we've said before, we're confident that HD-DVD will bring the excitement of high definition movies to the consumer faster and at a greater value. We believe that consumers have signaled what format they want to enjoy high definition DVD and we're going to follow them down that path. The question of whether Xbox 360 has the flexibility to adapt to consumers' needs is a different issue entirely. Xbox 360 is a future-proofed system - one that allows us to add features as consumers demand them - as evidenced by our offering of the HD DVD drive as an accessory. Current reports indicating that we have a back-up plan, which includes Blu-Ray support are incorrect. At this point, we're fully committed to HD-DVD and have absolutely no plans to support other optical formats.
Stream DivX movies to your Xbox 360 using MediaCenter
>> Well not really, the Xbox 360 will still not accept an DivX/XviD stream, but using this method you can convert your DivX/XviD videos to WMV on-the-fly while it's streaming to your Xbox360. You will of course still need a Windows MediaCenter PC, the real-time converting will put some load on your host PC and there might be some quality loss ... but overall it's easier than (re-)converting all your videos manually. Best choice would still be to use your old modded Xbox and XboxMediaCenter(info) of course :-)
This article shows how to stream DivX (and XviD) movies to an Xbox 360 using a Media Center. For the picky people, it doesn't actually stream DivX... it converts to WMV on the fly to stream. The core process for accomplishing this is taken from a thread found on the Xbox forums: Playing DivX movies without having to Re-encode, through media centre. This works fine, but has the disadvantage that you have to manually set up the encoding process on your Media Center and then move over to the Xbox 360 to watch it. So all this article really does is provide an MCE interface so you can control everything from your Xbox 360 being used as an MCE Extender. i.e. its for lazy people. It was also an excuse for me to write a ListMaker AddIn for MCE ... which i hadn't done yet.
