The 1991 "X-Box"
>> From slashdot.org
Back in college (1991), I wondered why no one had bothered to make a DOS-based game console. One day, in the back of a notebook, I made some notes about how you might go about creating a DOS-based game console. (I even called it an "X-Box", but really the "X" was there because I didn't know what else to call it. Microsoft's current "XBox" console is completely different, and I don't claim any rights to the "X-Box" name.) I've posted some scans of my notes, and a discussion about how you would create a DOS-based game console.
Offtopic: Nintendo confirms next-gen console
>> Somewhat offtopic , but just to confirm Nintendo plans to fight against the Playstation3 & XboxNext (Xbox2).
From theregister.co.uk:
Nintendo says it plans to a launch a new console to replace Gamecube in 2005 or 2006, scotching speculation that it plans to exit the console hardware marketd,
NCL president Satoru Iwata told Reuters: "When we withdraw from the home game console, that's when we withdraw from the video game business".
The GameCube is now expected to miss its sales targets for the year - falling more than 10 per cent short of its 10 million hardware unit sales target, and also missing its 55 million software unit sales target. But Nintendo remains determined to stay in the console race.
Xbox piracy crackdown begins (taiwan)
>> From spong.com
After only one month on general sale in Taiwan, the Xbox’s security has reportedly been seriously breached by hackers, leading the firm to issue a blanket warning to the region.
According to reports surfacing overnight, almost all of the console’s security measures have been cracked, with mod-chip production about to go into full swing. Reportedly, copied games are now openly on sale in China and Taiwan, indicating that security circumvention of the Xbox is commonplace. Further reports suggest that the online securities have also been breached, a serious concern for the Xbox Live system.
Eager to be the leader of intellectual property protection in the piracy-riddled region, Microsoft’s chief Xbox officer in Taiwan, Chow Wen-Ying, has stated that the firm will aggressively pursue any individual or organisation involved in making, selling or installing mod-chips, or those producing or selling illegal games.
Note that above information is not fully correct. We all know that the xbox has been "hacked" for several months now and that modchips are already in production for a long time. On the other side , xbox live is not hacked.
Thanks to Chris M. for the link.

XDeck project: IDE update
>> From xdeck.net:
The XDeck prototype is being split to go into two directions.
v0.01 - A basic IDE with isolation switch that is controlled via USB connection.
v0.02 - An advanced IDE to IDE bridge that allows up to 5 drives to be connected on a single IDE channel.
The first version that will be released will be v0.01 becouse it will be the cheapest to produce, hence lover retail cost. v.0.02 will be a bit tricky as I have not found anything remotly similar anywere. I am desinging it to be modular with v0.01 so it will be an upgradable option for the early adopters.
For those who forgot , Project X-Deck will allow a gamer to switch between the original hard drive and up to three other internal drives while maintaining the XBox look and feel. This will also include an option to switch to a secondary DVD drive & enable/disable modchip + bios selector.

Work In Progress: XiM
>> XiM (Xbox Instant Messenger) is a new xbox project. It's still in very early stage of development atm and they are looking for a c++ & xbox coder.
We are starting a project to make an Instant messenger for Xbox without having to have XboxLinux. Our goal is to have a working XboxInstantMessenger(XiM) Client that will allow you to message people using AIM...further support for clients such as MSN,Yahoo,ICQ etc. may be in later versions. We also hope to release a web browser for the Xbox. The project is set to feature an On-Screen Keyboard, AIM compatibility through the AOL Oscar servers, and the ability to run on an Xbox console standalone, with no other things required. We will also add in External Keyboard compatibility.
Our project is in the very early stages, as we are just planning and stuff, but we've run across a problem, we don't think the two of us is going to be enough to deliver a good project within a reasonable amount of time. We're looking for 1 c++ coder and 1 Xbox Coder. They must be very experienced and know what they are doing.
You can send your resumes to XiM_Dev@hotmail.com ALL HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED! We are looking to start developing in the Alpha stages in the upcoming weeks, and are currently waiting for the submission to Sourceforge.net to be released. This project will be licensed under the GPL and source will be released to the public VIA our upcoming Sourceforge.net website. (But the binaries dont have to be released )
Legal modchip solution without programmer
>> We all know that OpenXbox/PC-BioXX , Xodus/Matrix and X-ecuter2 Pro are being sold without bios so they can be sold without legal problems.
The guys over at ozxchip found an alternative way that does not need a (expensive) programmer.
The Australian XBox team known as Team OzX have packaged a boot CD called "OzXFlash" (based on Andy Green's Raincoat), this cd when used with the OzXChip LPC modchip will allow you to flash any bios onto your OzXChip by simply booting to the CD which is based on the Linux operating system for the XBox. To remain completely legal the OzXChip is shipped with the Cromwell bios so no Microsoft code is used at all for this programming innovation.
The first release of OzXFlash has been tested on both V1.0 and V1.1 XBox consoles, the current OzXFlash release requires a bios file to be burnt onto a seperate CD. Although development is currently in progress to allow for a bios selection menu as well as downloading of bios files from ftp and web servers.
They use the cromwell bios (legal bios developped by xbox-linux) to boot linux software that will be able to flash your modchip with any bios you want.
Originally made for their own OzXChip (cheapmod-design) I guess this system should work for any cheapmod clone. Anyway , they said the software will be updated for other flashable modchips later (x-ecuter2 , ...) They also told us the OzXFlash sources will be available soon.

Work In Progress: CloneXB
>> We have received information that a new tool is being programmed that will combine everything needed to backup Xsoftware into 1 program.
A new tool is on its way called CloneXB. A seamless way to backup you XBOX games via an FTP connection to a PC.
Click the copy button and it will copy all the files from the DVD currently in your XBOX across to your PC. Then it will create a proper GDF ISO image and burn it for you in the proper way (not UDF but real GDF) to ensure fastest loading times and compatability of your backups. It basically works like a regular CD/DVD copying program but copies across the network. You set the ftp settings from you EvolutionX dashboard ftp server once and then from then on its a one click process.
Project is currently %75 complete. Still have to implement the burning process.
The programmer also added this small note:
I was just emailed by a user with an enigmah mod who told me he loaded a BIOS he had previously modded with XBtool and, despite the fact that it said unknown BIOS, he patched it and flashed. This is exactly the reason for the warnings. NEVER patch an unknown BIOS, and don't use XBtool if YOU CAN'T RECOVER FROM A BAD FLASH (that means you, enigmah users). One of the latest we are working on which ya can see on the site is Evolution X - XSkin, This basically will allow you to create a whole customised evox.ini, customised menu and also a complete edited EvoX Menu screen with time date ip etc wherever you want it onscreen, We'll be trying to get that released soon but as I'm busy coding XCover and we are busy coding Evolution X - XSkin, I've also not been in contact with Osiris for a few days so i havent been able to update the code so much... But anyway here's to main point of me posting this news XCover v1.0.7 is on the way soon and will include these features * CD Printing * New Design * Skin Load Mode * All windows now open In the main window * Main screen now sizable * Better Quality Covers when saved I'm also trying to get a few more in there but I'm getting more busy at college and trying to get this new version out... If you got any idea's on programmes you wanna see for windows to help with the xbox scene contact us at xcover@xodus-chip.com and hopefully we can try to get somthing out for ya p33pZ, and last but not least I'd like to thank The Xodus Team for there support for XCover and everything else, Thanks guys!
