MC360 By Team Blackbolt - Coming Tuesday June 6th 2006
>> From blackbolt.x-scene.com:
It's now official, Tuesday 6th June 2006, a final release date for MC360, the X360 Reproduction skin for XboxMediaCenter(info) 2.0. The team has finalized a name, going with their original codename, 'Team Blackbolt', so this will be the team's collective name from now on. MC360's release on Tuesday marks the first public beta for the skin. As some of the close followers to the forum topics will know, its been a long winded process but the team is very excited to offer this first glimpse at their hard work. Myself, (Blackbolt), have spent many hours working away on many things, most of my work was done in the first months of design, but at the moment the main coder, Los93soL has been the hardest working team member, much to the dismay of several forum users who challenged his knowledge of MC360's production a few days ago! Bet they feel silly now. Los93soL has created nearly every one of the 164,442 lines of code in the skin, and we still haven't finished our goal of the ultimate 360 gui reproduction. Then we have Donno, our super scripter who for the first time also created XMLs. Kotix (Orbs Creator) and Smokehead (PDM & PM2 Reloaded) also covered us at the read and then there was JMarshall, helping us with XBMC code as we went. We also had help from Deanparry with catching some bugs. Because its taken over 5 months to bring this skin to the public, I will be creating a Developers Diary sort of thing with quotes from MSN and IRC chats between the developers of the skin and screenshots of bugs we found and other cool things, one funny day was when we first did the Full screen vis and video behind the blades in the home screens, the conversations where much like "omfg, the vis r0x0rzzzz!!!111". So until Tuesday, the team will be hammering away at the skin polishing the edges and making sure everything is ready for Joe public to download and slam into his Xbox and get running, so till then, enjoy the wait! :D
40usd XBL Vision camera, UNO Bundle and Prices and Dates other Accessories
>> From joystiq.com:
Our friendly anonymous source at Microsoft has provided us with a few more details concerning the 360 accessories announced back at E3. Perhaps the most important involves the bundling of the Xbox Live Vision camera with a wired headset, the popular Live Arcade title UNO, and a month of Live Gold service for $39.99 when it releases in the States on September 19, 2006.
Granted, this is still an unofficial report (based on a leak of "official" info), so understand that you're probably not gonna get much confirmation from MS until they're good and ready to give it. Here's information on what other peripherals are coming out "Holiday 2006" (so sometime in the 4th quarter) and at what price: * New faceplates featuring Halo, Forza 2, & Viva Pinata for $19.99 each * Wireless headest with a 30-foot range for $59.99 * 256MB Memory Unit for $59.99 * Wireless gaming receiver for $19.99 (but it'll go on sale in Winter 2007, unlike the others, probably around the month of February)
Backwards Compatibility Update Coming Soon
>> Since the Kikizo interview with Peter Moore posted yesterday lots of articles have been posted about Microsoft halting backwards compatibility updates after reading Moore's words in that very same interview:
Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility. We under promised and over delivered on that... More are coming, but at some point, you just go, there's enough, let's move on, or people aren't as worried about a game being backwards compatible - and I like to think we've upheld our end of the bargain in making at least two or maybe three hundred games backwards compat.
The Team Xbox GamerScore Blog now posted an official response:
Lots of talk about backwards compatibility online today. We wanted to get to the bottom of it all, so we went right to the team working on the next back compat update. We hear directly from them that they're in the testing phase of another update, and it should be out in the next few weeks. We saw the list they're testing, and it looks like they're hoping to add at least a dozen titles.
Long before the launch, we thought we might hit a few dozen titles, and we all feel pretty good about the list of well over 200 titles on the back compat list today, including many of the games that you've asked for. You all have heard us say the work isn't simple. Many games did unique things to take advantage of the processing power of the Xbox, and that makes it difficult to emulate, especially when we then have to make new code work with existing (and future) compatible titles.
But rest assured, we're not done yet. We know for a fact that there are lots of people who continue to care about backwards compatibility, including the "Emulation Ninjas" who are working full time on the updates. nd those of us posting on this blog. And, of course, many of you. Stay tuned for more information about the upcoming update...
Analyst: AMD and ATI May Merge
>> From gamedaily.com:
According to RBC Capital Markets, chip maker and Intel rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) may be looking to acquire graphics technology company ATI Technologies, which provides the GPUs for the Nintendo GameCube, the forthcoming Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360.
Analyst Apjit Walia believes that the PC food chain dictates that such a buyout is likely to take place, as graphics companies are often thought to be acquisition targets for microprocessor companies. "The synergies of this seem consistent with the recent announcements by AMD to significantly increase capacity over the next few-years," said Walia in a research note. "We believe ATI is a rare-buy in the semiconductor space right now given the near-term tie-up dynamics."
Bunnie about Xbox 360 Hacking and WSJ Article
>> Andrew "bunnie" Huang is one of the main guys behind the original Xbox hacking, he's also known for his book "Hacking the Xbox". He posted some stuff about the Xbox 360 on his his blog today:
There is a WSJ article [note x-scene: reg. req., however article seems to be freely available via azcentral.com] that was printed today that reports on some of my (relatively insignificant) dabblings on the Xbox360. I have kept a very low profile with respect to working on the Xbox360, but I guess this article changes things. The article is reasonably accurate, but I feel the need to clarify a few things.
First, hacking the 360 is not a race between me and The Specialist; the "bunnie v. Specialist" tag line is a result of the WSJ's editorial latitude and their perspective on the scene (and I, of all people, must respect their first amendment rights to report as they see fit, seeing as how I also stand behind the first amendment to protect my right to blog about controversial hacking topics). I give The Specialist huge props for his DVD firmware hack; it's a great hack and I respect his work a lot. When we found out about his work we were very excited and appreciated the great contributions he's made in furthering an understanding of the overall security system of the 360. We wouldn't be anywhere near where we are today without the openness and information-sharing that pervades the hacking scene, and I hope that the portrayal of hacking as a competitive sport does not close off these avenues. I know that I would not be where I am today if it were not for the great collaborations I've had in the past with so many anonymous hackers, and my ability to contribute on the 360 would also be greatly diminished if I were to lose such valuable collaborations.
Second, while I have been dabbling in the Xbox360, I've been a bit delinquent lately-very busy with my day job, and I haven't touched the Xbox360 to do any real work on it for a couple months. I owe Speedy22 an apology for not being more diligent about sending him micrographs of the XCPU, but really, right now the pictures aren't very interesting because all the metal is still on the chip (working with a local vendor to get it removed but it takes a lot of time). Speedy22 was kind enough to provide me some samples of the Xbox360's chips to digest, and I appreciate his generosity in sending them to me. I also owe tmbinc an apology, I was supposed to run a set of experiments on the "virgin" ROM images that I never got around to. If you still need those results, I'll get to it.
In the meantime, I hope to refine a technique that will gain access to the polysilicon layer of the XCPU while being non-destructive to the function of the chip. Such access is currently thought to be a major stumbling block to extracting the necessary keys for decrypting firmware images on the Xbox360-and the first step toward homebrewing code on the Xbox360. I wouldn't hold my breath, however-the technique is very risky and I don't have a whole lot of time to perfect it. I have to build some custom equipment to help control the etch bath properties for peeling back the silicon. Still, it will be fun and even if it is not successful, I'll learn something new while I develop the hack!
(above) Micrograph of the logo region on the 360 XCPU die. The pattern of metal dots you see are the fill pattern used to make the metal layers statistically uniform at the macro-level for the purposes of chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP), a process used to planarize metal layers during manufacturing. CMP is an important enabling technology for both copper technology (dual-damascene processing) as well as for enabling very high metal-layer counts to meet the wiring demands of today's technology. Before CMP technology, metal layers would develop a 3-D topography that would limit the height of metal stacks. As one can see, CMP tiles also make a great tamper-resistance measure because the CMP tiles interfere with reading the underlying silicon patterns. Peeling back these layers is a destructive process, and can be a difficult and time-consuming. It requires a similar chemical-etch and mechanical-polish technique used during fabrication, and the technique has to be precise to sub-micron depths across a relatively large area. Alternative techniques are being developed to solve this problem.
Pachter Comments On Xbox 360 Game Price Drops
>> From gamasutra.com:
Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has analyzed the recently announced and impending price cuts for Xbox 360 titles in his latest note to investors, and noted that, while some titles launched alongside or within the launch window of the Xbox 360 have held onto their initial price point, the analyst expects a price drop for all such games in the near to immediate future as part of "a normal occurrence in the industry."
Pachter commented that, while the prices assigned to a video games following their initial release traditionally follows a pattern of dropping $10 every 60 days or so, some Xbox 360 releases have yet to see a decrease from their initial price of $59.99. Price reductions for video games are part of the normal aging process that all releases go through, as noted by Pachter, who wrote: "In fact, we are surprised that games for the Xbox 360 have held launch pricing as long as they have (more than six months), and attribute their staying power to a lack of hardware supply over the first months following launch." Analyst: Microsoft to Enter Portable Gaming Market in Late 2007, Early 2008
>> From teamxbox.com:
According to The Diffusion Group, Microsoft is expected to leverage its Xbox franchise to enter the portable game console market in late 2007 or early 2008. According to the report, Microsoft's first portable console would be similar to Sony's PSP.
"Microsoft has been waiting on the sidelines until its gaming console and software business reached sustainability, all the while watching closely how Nintendo and consumers in general would respond to Sony's PSP," said Thomas Wolf, a portable media analyst and co-author of TDG's latest report. "With global PGC revenues expected to reach $3 billion annually by 2008, and with only Sony and Nintendo active in the PGC space, Microsoft has before it an incredible opportunity. It has a critical brand presence in the console space, the breadth and depth of gaming titles, and the marketing clout necessary to enter this space and win decent market share."
According to TDG's report, Microsoft has been evaluating two options regarding its portable gaming strategy: licensing a version of its Xbox OS for others to build portable hardware designs upon, or introducing its own branded PGC.
Xbox Live Cam Tester Caught on Camera

Microsoft execs slam Sony Blu-Ray strategy

Xbox 360 Faceplate Review Part 1
>> Here's the 1st part of the Xbox-Scene Xbox 360 Faceplate Review (covering faceplates from Nov 2005 to April 2006) written by HSDEMONZ. Here's a short excerpt of the introduction:
This review continues to grow beyond the scope I had first intended. Originally, I had intended to only comment on the differences between the Stock Faceplate, with the Microsoft aftermarket Faceplates. (and there are differences) Then we started seeing some third party options like Joytech, Pelican, and MadCatz faceplates. In and around the launch of all those third party plates, we've had 2 released batches of TeamXtender.com Faceplates, with Chrome Plates recently made available. (not covered in this review are the TeamXtender.com Chrome Plates, and any special or limited edition faceplates handed out with games, or part of special promotions like the E3 plates, or Launch handouts, etc.) What was supposed to be at first a simple review is now one that will span a number of articles. With so many options, priced between $10-24 US, there is quite literally replacement Faceplates to suit your every mood.
Glitch In The System: Round Three
>> From xbox360.ign.com:
In the weeks following the Xbox 360 launch in November 2005, IGN received hundreds of complaints of faulty systems with a laundry list of problems, most notably overheating, disc-scratching and outright system failure. These complaints tapered off in recent months for a few reasons: Microsoft has made improvements in the manufacturing process; a high number of these problems were caused by the user and not Microsoft, specifically not keeping the console properly ventilated and moving the console while it is on; and, finally, there weren't very many consoles to go around after the initial batch at launch.
But six months into the launch, IGN is still receiving complaints on a daily basis. Of course, we also receive death threats and porn solicitations, so our emails are always taken with a grain of salt. Around the office, too, we've experienced the problem first-hand. At last count, nine Xbox 360s that belong to IGN editors have completely crashed. Two editors, Hilary Goldstein and Jessica Chobot, have had two systems go kaput.
In a poll posted on IGN's Xbox 360 general message board, we asked a simple question: "Is your 360 broken?" Of 751 total votes, 520 (69 percent) responded "No, everything works fine." 113 people (15 percent) responded "Sort of -- there are small problems like occasional freezing or my controllers aren't recognized, but I'll live." 118 people, (15 percent) responded, "Yes. It's completely broken and I have already or need to contact Microsoft and send it in."
In response to these numbers and stories, a Microsoft representative told us yesterday: "While I can't speak to the anomaly of the issues of the consoles in your office, what I can tell you is that we have access to the data of the 3.5 million Xbox 360 customers around the world, and out of that global data we are tracking within a three to five percent return rate which is well within the accepted standards for the consumer electronic products." XCM High Speed Cooler Info and Installation Guide
>> Earlier this week we already showed you the first real-life images of the XCM High Speed Cooler. Team Xtender now posted the installation diagrams for this product that's not an external addon cooler but instead it's a replacement for the original fans in the Xbox 360 complete with temperature sensors on the CPU and GPU heatsink and an external LCD and buttons to monitor and control the temperature/fan speed. The fan/temp-sensors communicate with the external LCD via infrared, the power required for the high speed fans is taken from the DVD powerplug, the LCD gets power from one of the external USB ports. Here are some images from the installation guide to give you an idea how this cooler works:
